As it turned out, the werewolves were working the upper slopes of Silver Springs, the most affluent part of town. Here, the houses were more like mansions, each overlooking the river valley far below.

Now Kirk really felt conspicuous.

Should have brought my toolbox, he thought, walking up the driveway of The Aspens, a massive white wooden house that looked immaculately kept up. At least then the people who live here would just write me off as the hired help, instead of a potential threat. He noticed several curtains twitching from the neighboring house as he approached.

“Kirk!” said a loud, familiar voice as Kirk’s boots crunched up the gravel driveway. “So glad you could come! How are you doing, how’s Leo?”

Kirk’s lips twitched. Brand sounded as if Kirk was doing him a favor by showing up here unexpectedly. That was typical of him. It put Kirk solidly in the position of invited guest, not interloper.

Brand was saying, I know you’re too smart to come here and threaten me, so let’s pretend I asked you over. And though it looked like Brand was meeting him alone, Kirk could smell several other werewolves nearby, ready and waiting. Just in case.

“We’re good,” Kirk said shortly. He felt uncomfortable, standing here in the driveway of a mansion whose owners he’d never met, and no doubt that was deliberate, too. “You work here?”

“Indeed,” Brand said, his rich voice lingering on the word. “Come in, there’s nobody home.”

They walked up to the back door, which led into a kitchen. Not the main kitchen, clearly; there was no gleaming chrome, just simple, functional appliances. The servants’ kitchen.

As they walked in, Kirk looked Brand up and down. The pack leader was wearing all black, with a fitted vest that looked somehow strange, too heavily padded to flatter the bulk of Brand’s body. Kirk sniffed at it and caught a strange scent: silicon, ceramics. Ah. Bulletproof.

“Yes,” Brand answered his unspoken thought. “We signed on as private security. A special taskforce. There’s been a rash of burglaries lately.”

Kirk thought about that for a second. He had a strong suspicion that Brand’s sense of morality was dubious, at best. “Before or after you guys came into town?”

Brand grinned, baring strong canines. “You’re quick, Kirk. I like that about you.”

Kirk shook his head, though he couldn’t help smiling a little. He didn’t approve of the way the wolf pack treated normal humans: like toys, like things to be pushed around. But a part of him had to admire the sheer audacity of what they were doing.

Brand sniffed back at him companionably, a wolf’s greeting. “Mm, Leo’s doing well, I see. And—” he paused, and his affable expression changed into something a little darker, though it quickly smoothed over again.

Kirk nodded back grimly. There was an advantage to dealing with another werewolf; some things didn’t need to be spelled out. “Yes. Erick.”

Brand shook his head. “He came up to the cabin?”

“No, he harassed Leo in town. My town. I wasn’t there.”

“Of course,” Brand muttered. “He’s afraid of you.
